Italian Cooperation and B2B Meetings in Cape Town by Dianne Makings, Director

The Cape Town International Animation Festival was fortunate in forming a cooperation agreement between RAI’s Cartoons on the Bay and the CTIAF.

This partnership between our festivals has led to an increased measure of interest from our various animation and VFX studios in the potential cooperation between countries. Additionally, the coproduction agreement currently in place further incentivises talks between countries.

It is with great pleasure that we will be working with Antonio Falduto to set up producer to producer meetings during their visit here in SA. Animation South Africa (A.S.A) is a non-profit organization mandated by industry to develop, promote and represent South African animation.

They were founded in 2006 by a group of like-minded animation industry professionals who came together to create a culture of knowledge-sharing in South African animation. They currently have two chapters, one in Cape Town and one in Johannesburg. Relaunched in 2015 with a new board of directors elected by their member-base, their vision is to nurture a vibrant, sustainable and transformed Animation and VFX industry for South Africa, offering a diverse range of content and services that is unique and globally competitive.

Offering something for all ages, the annual Festival brings South Africans the chance to catch some of the world’s best animated films as well as an exciting range of masterclasses and workshops with global industry leaders, providing a rare opportunity to engage with them.

The CTIAF has become a significant fixture on the international festival calendar and provides a platform and marketplace for the fast-growing African animation industry. The Festival also hosts business-to-business sessions, producer events, networking opportunities and government panel discussions in addition to student competitions, an outreach programme and screenings.

The Schools’ student competition has been extended to include high schools this year, with Nickelodeon once again sponsoring the phenomenal opportunity for one student to. WESGRO Wesgro, the government agency that promotes the economy of Cape Town and the Western Cape wants to help you uncover opportunities.

Our destination is a highly sought after film destination, with major international and local productions coming to the province for our wide range of locations and exemplary services and studios. Wesgro holds the film and media promotion mandate for Cape Town and the Western Cape. Since 2013, Wesgro’s Film and Media Promotion unit has collaborated with the Italian Film Focus annually in Cape Town, through hosting masterclasses or B2B sessions.
